Michel de Montaigne (1533–92) was a French essayist. Architect and greatest master of the essay as a modern literary form, he was a magistrate (1557–70) and mayor of Bordeaux (1581–85). He created his first two books of Essays while living in retirement between 1571 and 1580, and the third after 1586. The essays display the growth of Montaigne's thinking, from a study of himself into a more universal study of humanity and nature. The early works show his anxiety with pain and death. A middle period is portrayed by his doubt regarding all knowledge. Montaigne's last essays reflect his recognition of life as good and his certainty that people must determine their own nature in order to live in peace and dignity. The Essays reflect a varied variety of subjects of universal concern and have significantly affected both later French writing and English literature.
